Setting the Foundation

If your New Year’s Resolutions involve future planning for yourself or a loved one, this blog post is tailored to assist you in laying a solid foundation. The goal is to ensure that your resolutions don’t end up as metaphorical expensive clothes racks but rather lead to clear paths and attainable goals.

Step One: Gather Your Thoughts

Embarking on the future planning journey requires grounding and self-reflection. As a Traveler or a Navigator/Support person, start by understanding how you reached this point and why. Consider what concerns you, if you’ve started the process, and what obstacles have hindered your progress. Aim for awareness, not necessarily right or wrong answers. Take the time to reflect, jot down your thoughts, and let your mind wander.

Step Two: Envision Success

Once grounded, shift your focus to envisioning success. Success in future planning extends beyond job or education – it encompasses independence, community belonging, personal connections, and self-care. Consider what success means for you or the Traveler, envisioning incremental steps toward that success. Reflect on recent successes and experiences that shape your view of a successful future.

Step 3: Pain Points

Reflect on past attempts at future planning and acknowledge the pain points that may have derailed your journey. Consider what got in the way, whether it’s becoming overwhelmed with the process, distractions, fears, or avoidance. Identify worries about the planning process or the future itself. Reflect on past efforts, noting where you got stuck. Be honest in exploring worries or fears about what lies ahead.

Step 4: Gains

Celebrate successes and identify areas where things are on the right path. Recognize and build upon past achievements in future planning. Reflect on what made the process successful, who was in the driver’s seat, and how these efforts have been implemented. Consider the foundational skills already possessed and acknowledge strengths in these areas that will bolster future success.

As we kick off this New Year, let’s commit to strategic future planning for success.
